Where is Taiwan?

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), is a country in East Asia, at the junction of the East and South China Seas in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south. The territories controlled by the ROC consist of 168 islands, with a combined area of 36,193 square kilometres (13,974 sq mi).

The main island of Taiwan, also known as Formosa, has an area of 35,808 square kilometers (13,826 sq mi), with mountain ranges dominating the eastern two-thirds and plains in the western third, where its highly urbanised population is concentrated. The capital, Taipei, forms along with New Taipei City and Keelung the largest metropolitan area of Taiwan. Other major cities include Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. With around 23.9 million inhabitants, Taiwan is among the most densely populated countries in the world. (Reference: Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan)

Climate in Taiwan

Taiwan lies on the Tropic of Cancer, and its general climate is marine tropical. The northern and central regions are subtropical, whereas the south is tropical and the mountainous regions are temperate. The average rainfall is 2,600 millimeters (100 inches) per year for the island proper; the rainy season is concurrent with the onset of the summer East Asian Monsoon in May and June.

During the winter (November to March), the northeast experiences steady rain, while the central and southern parts of the island are mostly sunny. What to wear on Taiwan Winter?

Living in Taiwan for almost 16 years, taught me how to dress according to the location. By saying, “according to the location”, it literally means having to prepare different kinds of winter outfits depending on which city I am in at that particular moment or time.

The most perfect example for this situation is someone from Taipei spending a weekend in Kaohsiung during the winter. It is a common knowledge in Taiwan that many locals from the Northern part love to spend quick warm days at the south due to the gap in temperature.

Kaohsiung and some other southern parts of Taiwan have warmer weather during the winter compared to the places at the north. Due to this temperature gap, it is necessary for the people from the southern part of Taiwan to know what to wear or bring if they happen to visit Taipei 101 for the Fireworks display and of course for the New Year countdown.

Taipei 101 Stunning Fireworks Display Outfit Idea

The annual Fireworks display in Taipei 101 was opened grandly on December 31, 2004 to welcome the new year, 2005. From then on, a huge number of crowd gather in Xinyi area to witness the most awaited event in Taipei. In my 16 years of experience, I personally noticed and observed that the weather during this day of the year is particularly cold and wet.

Indeed, it often rains during Taipei 101 Fireworks display so it is very much important for the travelers to know what to wear and what to bring to be ready for the big night.

Take note, these are just outfit ideas for you, it doesn’t mean you have to dress like this. The best thing about having a fashion guide for an occasion is that you will be able to know what to expect and understand your tolerance to the cold and wet weather in Taipei City.

December 31, 2007 “New Year 2008”

Outfit of the day #ootd

  1. Long black buttoned down winter coat
  2. Long hooded slim fit zipper shirt
  3. White tank top
  4. Dark brown slouch boots

This sassy look for Taiwan winter fashion was undeniably an icon but it wasn’t the best idea for the fireworks display. Although the weather in Taipei during this year wasn’t wet, but the wind that kept on blowing surely gave some unwanted shivers.

This was 10/10 for a look but a 5/10 in terms of usefulness for the weather.

December 31, 2008 “New Year 2009”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Long Gray Reefer Coat for Women
  2. Blue Princess cut dress
  3. Yellow tank top
  4. Sparkly undercover stockings
  5. Blue ruby slippers

An elegant look for this year’s winter with a nice monochromatic match of the princess cut dress and the ruby slippers.

This is a 10/10 look for Taiwan winter fashion and an 8/10 for the wet weather. The nice warmth from the long reefer helped alot to cover the long hours of waiting for the fireworks display.

December 31, 2009 “New Year 2010”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Parka
  2. Long sleeve shirt
  3. Skimpy short jumpsuit
  4. Warmer leggings
  5. Shearling Boots

The look was sexy but still conservative in a way with the black leg warmer. For a cold season, black stockings, black leggings or warmers are in, while skin toned stockings are for the warmer season.

Certainly this casual street fashion in Taiwan was worn by many young ladies but this entailed full stamina for the cold breeze at night most especially the lengthy hours of waiting for the fireworks display.

This was a 6/10 for the fashion level and a 4/10 for the winter season in Taiwan. As I have mentioned it is particularly much more colder during New Year’s eve so this outfit wasn’t the best choice after all.

December 31, 2010 “New Year 2011”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Beanie
  2. Down Jacket
  3. Zipped Coat
  4. Long sleeved shirt
  5. Cargo Pants
  6. Sneakers

This was the most ordinary outfit I had for Taipei 101 fireworks display because I tried to witness the New year’s eve concert. It was indeed an energetic night full of songs and dances from Taiwan celebrities but this was my first and last try of this young people craze.

In terms of fashion, this would be a 3/10 but for the cold weather, it’s an 8/10. A look that would definitely be once in my lifetime.

December 31, 2011 “New Year 2012”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Frock
  2. Floral Long Sleeve Shirt
  3. Mini Pencil Skirt
  4. Leg warmer
  5. Pump
  6. Knitted Scarf

This was the first ever 10/10 winter fashion I had worn for Taipei 101 fireworks display. The overall impact wasn’t overdressed yet not underdressed just enough for the temperature and the occasion.

This was my first ever experience too of the first flag raising ceremony in Taipei, Taiwan.

December 31, 2012 “New Year 2013”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Cape
  2. Mini Knitted Long Sleeve Dress
  3. Thermal Shirt
  4. Leg warmer
  5. Shearling Boots

An elegant look for a mother like me. Yes! It was my first time to witness Taipei 101 fireworks with my first child BBK, who was about 3 months old. Since we were in the car for the whole time, this outfit was just enough for the cold season.

This look was an 8/10 for a fashion trend and a 9/10 for the occasion. And expect more flat footwear starting this year. I can choose to wear heels but for my safety and my baby, I started to get used to flats.

December 31, 2013 “New Year 2014”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. A Tshirt
  2. A Black coat
  3. A Skimpy wool shortpants
  4. Printed stocking
  5. Ballerina shoes

I wasn’t sure if I was already pregnant but it was indeed an uncomfortable night. It was just so lucky for me to be in the car for the whole time with my toddler but I wouldn’t recommend this look for those who cannot withstand the cold weather.

This look was 6/10 for the fashion style and a 5/10 for the fireworks display. This would surely give you flu if worn from dusk until dawn.

December 31, 2014 “New Year 2015”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Hoody sweat shirt
  2. Denim mini skirt
  3. Black thermal stocking
  4. Beanie
  5. Wedge sneaker

A casual outfit for mothers in Taiwan. This year, I had my second child and he was about 2 months old during the fireworks display. Somehow, carrying a child all the time would mean a simple and comfortable outfit that’s suitable for the long day. This was a 2/10 for a fashion idea in Taipei 101 but an 8/10 in terms of endurance for the cold and wet new year’s eve.

December 31, 2015 “New Year 2016”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Fur Scarf
  2. Zara Faux Leather Jacket
  3. Patched Faux Leather Leggings

This was one of my favorite outfits for the New Year countdown. This was a 10/10 OOTD for the fireworks display. A sassy and an elegant combination for a unique winter fashion. I would definitely wear this set again.

December 31, 2016 “New Year 2017”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Korean Style Frock
  2. Knitted Korean Dress
  3. Thermal Shirt
  4. Mesh Stocking
  5. Frye Boots

Another 10/10 outfit for the fireworks display. This Korean inspired OOTD was quite a glam.

December 31, 2017 “New Year 2018”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Fur coat
  2. Lace long sleeve top
  3. Sequenced spaghetti strap
  4. Sequenced leggings
  5. Sparkly Sock Boots

The most glamorous outfit I had for this year’s fireworks display. I was able to survive the cold weather by taking a sip of red wine in the car. This was a 10/10 for the fashion level but for the outdoor wait, this was a 5/10. You’d probably catch a cold afterwards minus the red wine.

December 31, 2018 “New Year 2019”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Fur coat
  2. White spaghetti lace dress
  3. Wedge

This was a 10/10 for an elegant look at Taipei 101 after a fine dining but this would surely be a 5/10 for the wet weather during the fireworks display.

I was only wearing this since we were inside the car with the kids while waiting for the countdown. If you were to stroll around Xinyi, this outfit would definitely give you chills.

December 31, 2019 “New Year 2020”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Double breasted trench coat
  2. Thermal shirt
  3. A leg warmer
  4. Lita Boots

Simple yet elegant outfit for the fireworks display. Just the right amount of fashion sense. A 10/10 for sure.

December 31, 2020 “New Year 2021”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Checkered Blazer
  2. Thermal Shirt
  3. Checkered Pants
  4. Sketchers sneakers

This was a different kind of fashion sense this year. A working mom look with a little twist with the checkered theme. The sketchers shoes made the look more casual.

This was a 7/10 for Taipei 101 goer fashion but a 9/10 for the cold winter season. The blazers and the pants were really warm and comfy.

December 31, 2021 “New Year 2022”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Faux Fur coat from Canada inspired by Cebuana Song
  2. An athletic set and Thermal shirt combination
  3. Lita Boots

A quirky look that stood out the rest of the evening. The yellow faux fur which I bought from Canada was an attention stealer. This was a comfortable look and attire for the new year’s eve indeed with an overall score of 9/10.

December 31, 2022 “New Year 2023”

Outfit of the Day #ootd

  1. Turtleneck
  2. Leather skirt
  3. Sock boots
  4. A wrap

This Korean inspired look was most definitely a 10/10 in all aspect. The nice wrap kept me warm while the vibrant earth color made the gloomy and rainy night turned into a jolly atmosphere.

I would definitely prance Xinyi District in this OOTD. Simple, warm and elegant. Perfect for the place and the occasion!

December 31, 2023 “New year 2024”

Outfit of the day #ootd

  1. Black Longsleeves Top
  2. Bru Velvet Cami Set : Top, Super Crop Top Jacket and Pants
  3. Large Overcoat
  4. Big black leather shoes from Charles and Keith
  5. Crochet 2 way hand bag

This #ootd is inspired by my velvet set that’s so comfy and useful in many of my events most especially if I had to wear full make up. The buttoned down top made the changing so easy.

This Bru Velvet Cami Set is an experiment and it wasn’t really meant to coincide the theme for the Dragon year until I saw so many ootd posts from the social media and we all chose the same shade of outfit.

I’m glad I decided to buy this set.
