Birth of a short documentary film “Migrant Birds”

I was having a serious discussion with my friends in Taiwan about the making of a short film. It’s came to my mind that instead of doing a short film, a documentary film maybe more effective and realistic.

While surfing on the internet, I found a film festival competition which is going to happen in Taiwan (3Minute Video Competition https://www.facebook.com/3minvideocompetition) which triggered my mind to do a short documentary film.

Ms. Gen (Hello PhilTai) was came forward with generous support to produce the film with all her contents. We both decided to do a film on the Filipino who are working and living in Taiwan, and how they are success with the Taiwan government. We named the film as “Migrant Birds” the Filipinos in Taiwan.

An amazing short interview video made by Gen helped me to narrate the story. And the visual she gave from her your tube channel “Hello PhilTai Tv (https://www.youtube.com/@HelloPhilTaiTV)enabled me to add visuals to the content.

The film starts with a voice narration recorded with my voice and continues with Gen’s interview and then with my voice. Made an inspiring music by purchasing online. Made a small title animation in after effects gave a beautiful intro to the film.

Overall the film was made in 5 hours of working time within a day we completed and sent it for festival. This film is just a glimpse but we can make a full length feature documentary film with this same concept if we find an investor.

My learning from this project is, “Taking up the challenging task and implement it without any compromise.” This is my quote, which I always keep in front before I take up any project. This project made me to keep up the promise to complete the task on time without compromising.

Very importantly, I learnt both the culture of Filipino and Taiwanese. The acceptance of Taiwanese are amazing and the care for neighboring countries is remarkable.

You Filipinos are doing amazing job in Taiwan. Fly high together Migrant Birds! Hope for the best.

My sincere thanks to:

Gen (Hello PhilTai) (my first international producer and my sister from different mother)

Filipinos in Taiwan

Filipinos in Taiwan consist mainly of immigrants and workers from the Philippines. Filipinos form the third largest national contingent of migrant workers and account for about one-fifth of foreign workers in Taiwan as of April 2019.

Around 800 years ago, the ancestors of the Tao people, considered a Taiwanese aboriginal group, arrived on Orchid Island from the Batanes archipelago.

The strong Taiwanese economy, particularly in the manufacturing industries, attracts cheap manual labor from the Philippines. Most Filipinos working in Taiwan work as factory workers, domestic workers, construction workers, fishermen and professionals and they would send a large part of their earnings to their families in the Philippines.[2] Many Taiwanese men have also chosen Filipino women as brides through arranged marriages. An estimated 7,000 Filipino women now live there with their Taiwanese husbands.

Philippine holidays such as Independence day and José Rizal Day are also celebrated by the Filipino community in Taiwan.

Many Philippine-educated Chinese Filipinos or so called Chinoys (Traditional Chinese: 華菲人) from middle-class families have migrated to Taiwan since the early 1990s. Approximately 1000 or more now have Taiwan citizenship.

Based on a report by Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS), as of end of April 2019, 154,000 OFWs are living and working in Taiwan.[5

There are many Filipino stores, cargo, remittances and restaurants throughout the island of Taiwan.
