1. Huwei or Hobe Fort

Best Tourist Spots to try in Taiwan 2025

Hobe Fort was finished in 1888 (the Guang-Xu 12th year of the Qing dynasty), taking western forts as a reference to design blueprint. So far it is the best preserved fort built by Liu Mingchuan in Taiwan.

At that time Governor Liu purchased 31 “Armstrong” cannons and German “Krupp” cannons from the British through the Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited and set up these cannons at ten new forts in Taiwan. The installation of these cannons was completed in 1889 (the Guang-Xu 15th year of the Qing dynasty). However Hobe Fort never saw action during wartime, hence its fairly good shape.

2. Daxi Old Street

Best Tourist Spots to try in Taiwan 2025

Daxi was the earliest developed area in Taoyuan. Thanks to small sailboats sailing between Dahan Creek and Tamsui River, Daxi had a thriving trade with China, and its prosperity brought success to many stores and businessmen.

During the Japanese occupation period of the Taisho era, Baroque architecture was the popular building style and therefore many stores along Heping Road and Zhongshan Road were built in the Baroque style, but decorated with both Baroque ornamentation and characteristic totems of Min-nan in Southern China.

On the facade of some old houses, auspicious Chinese fish and bat totems appear on Greek lintels or Roman columns, constituting a unique feature of Daxi. Because Heping Old Street was developed relatively later, the buildings in this area are better preserved. Specialty shops and food stands on the street always attract many tourists.

Other scenic attractions in the area include Daxi Bridge, Lee Teng-Fang Ancient Residence, Wude Temple, Daxi Wood Art Ecomuseum, etc. Daxi Old Street provides not only traditional Taiwanese toys, but also authentic must-try Taiwanese delicacies, including Daxi dried tofu, moonlight cakes, peanut caramel candies, tofu puddings, salty rice puddings and rice dumplings. When traveling in Taoyuan, be sure to visit Daxi Old Street, where you will experience the true Taiwanese flavor!

4. Cha Kitchen or Just Tea

Best Tourist Spots to try in Taiwan 2025

In the summer of 1998, six brothers from Changhua opened their first “Cha Zi Dian” restaurant on Tongde 5th Street in Taoyuan City. Their signature freshly prepared dishes, along with their Chinese-style decor, playful swings, and waitresses in high-cut cheongsams, created a classic and elegant atmosphere, and it became an instant hit.

As people’s living standards improve, they demand not only delicious food but also healthy food. Therefore, our headquarters has begun collaborating with major food manufacturers to strengthen management of food processing and hygiene. We recently joined the Food Traceability Association and are gradually adopting traceable ingredients.

In 2022, the brand relaunched, launching the second-generation store. The decor is primarily blue with gold accents, embracing the British luxury style favored by modern consumers. The logo, in the shape of a tea leaf, evokes the brand’s sprawling growth.

In 2023, the company launched a takeout, hand-shaken bento shop, bringing the concepts of hot, traceable, and refined flavors to the bento industry.

5. Xiao Bai Gong or Tamsui Customs Officers’ Residence

Best Tourist Spots to try in Taiwan 2025

In 1858, following the Second Opium War, Taiwan was forced to open its ports for trade under the Beijing and the Tienjin Treaties. 4 years later, a customs office was established in Tamsui following the opening of Tamsui Port. Initially, there were only a few foreign customs officers, most of whom lived in the customs office building or rental houses nearby.

Tamsui Customs administration then purchased a piece of land in 1866 and subsequently built official staff residences in 1869.

The building has a square layout and a splendid view of the Tamsui River and Mt. Guanyin. The foundation of the building is elevated 3 feet high, which allows humidity to be carried away through the square-shaped ventilation holes by the flowing breeze. The structure is a classic colonial-style building known as a “bungalow.”

It was nicknamed “Xiao Bai Gong,” meaning “Little White House” due to its ash-white appearance. It features ash-white outer walls, a terrace with a magnificent view, a veranda with arched columns, and a vintage fireplace.

8. Yongsheng Restaurant/Yongsheng Beef House/Yongsheng Beef Noodles

Best Tourist Spots to try in Taiwan 2025

Great taste of Taiwan! I’ve heard famous public personalities in Taiwan come to this restaurant too.

Yongsheng Restaurant was established in 1970. It started out as a shabby little house and has been around for decades, relying on word of mouth. Yongsheng specializes in beef dishes and inherits the characteristics of the beef restaurants in Taoyuan.

It is now run by the second generation, who have inherited the craftsmanship and accumulated many regular customers. They insist on the quality of their meals while also innovating. Originally started as a beef noodle shop, it was later transformed into a restaurant where you can enjoy it alone, with a table of two, or with two people!

11. Brick Yard 33 1/3 Yangmingshan American Village

Best Tourist Spots to try in Taiwan 2025

Preserving the nostalgic flavor of the past and ushering in the spirit of the new era, we’ve all experienced this.

A familiar song plays, and my heart flutters. I sway my toes to the rhythm, humming the familiar melody. In my head, I picture him or her, their radiant smile in the sun, or that embrace that feels like eternity. Those picturesque days are gone forever. 33 and a third is the speed of the vinyl record. Through warm and familiar music, we hear ourselves through each track, finding a way to lift our heads and smile every time we feel like crying. Music lovers understand.

As time slipped by, I was caught in a vortex of space, and Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” lingered in my ears, enveloping me in the atmosphere of the 1970s.

The Cold War era unfolded, and Yangmingshan in Taipei was filled with memories of American soldiers. Far from home, and filled with anxiety about whether they could return safely, they settled there temporarily. This American club became a haven for them, offering a moment of relaxation.

This is located at Yangmingshan’s American Village in Shilin, Taipei. It serves a great menu and quite a selection of alcohol and beverages. The place is so Instagrammable too! And I think the most interesting part is, it’s where Jay Chou shot his Music Video for his song Yangmingshan.

14. Guanghua Digital Plaza

Best Tourist Spots to try in Taiwan 2025

The largest electronics marketplace in Taiwan, Guanghua is arguably the centre of the booming Taiwanese technology and IT industries. In addition to the main, 6-story building housing everything from PC components to karaoke systems, the lanes and alleys directly south of the complex along Bade Rd are home to countless shops selling literally anything and everything tech.

Prices in Guanghua are industry-standard, fair prices, and are very clearly posted, eliminating the hassle of having to bargain with merchants, although some merchants will offer small upgrades or free accessories to secure your sale due to intense competition within the market.

Next door to the main building at Guanghua is the Syntrend Creative Park (三創數位生活園區), a multi-storey shopping mall designed as more of an exhibition space for technology companies and their latest developments, including a gaming area with VR (virtual reality) experiences.

Be aware that most merchants operate their businesses primarily by cash, and minor service charges may be levied for MasterCard/Visa/Unionpay usage and official receipts.

Traditionally named as Gandoumen, Guandu leans against Guanyin and Datun Mountains and faces Tamsui River. An important port standing at a geological vantage point, Guandu Wharf used to receive pioneering settlers aiming at northern Taiwan. Thriving early, it declined due to silted muds and sands from Keelung and Tamsui Rivers.

Guandu Wharf is near Guandu Nature Park and Guandu Temple. On weekends and at night, visitors come to the wharf to take a walk. Cyclists also visit here through Guandu Bridge from Bali or Tamsui. The scenery along the way is beautiful. Guandu Wharf itself is ideal for watching river views.
