Shifen Waterfall is a ledge waterfall. The rock formations on both sides of the waterfall go against the flow of the water, which is a geological feature called the anticline structure. It is dubbed Taiwan’s Niagara Falls because of the panorama similar to that of Niagara Falls in North America. The majestic stream splashes as it rushes into the extremely deep pool below the waterfall. As the sun shines on the mist, a rainbow can be seen hanging over the waterfall or pool, earning it the name “Rainbow Pool.”

20 Best Attractions to visit in Taiwan
Before the year Showa 8 (1933), Jinguashi was located next to Gengziliao (present-day Jiufen) and the two together were called Jiufen area. Later, when the gold mining industry in Jinguashi began to develop, a densely populated settlement gradually formed.
At that time, one of the rocky peaks on the surrounding mountains resembled a golden gourd, so the name of this area was changed to “Jinguashi”(Golden Gourd Rock)” by order of the Japanese Governor’s Office, and “Jiufen” was only used to refer to the area which was formerly known as “Gengziliao”.
According to the local elders, the outcropping part of the mountain resembled a large pumpkin, which is known as a “Golden Gourd” in the dialect, thus giving rise to the name ” Jinguashi (Golden Gourd Rock)”.

Located by Jinshui Highway (known by the local as Romantic Highway) leading to Changren Community of Shuinandong, Golden Waterfall provides a view of a world-renowned wonder, “Yin Yang Sea.”
Jinguashi in the old days was a mining site, and therefore the hills here contain a high amount of iron pyrite and enargite. Whenever the waterfall gets washed by rain, chemical reactions take place. With time, the waterfall carries an orange-golden sheen. This is how the waterfall acquired its name, and why it became a famous scenic spot in Jinguashi.

5. Yin Yang Sea

Located north of the Shuinandong settlement in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, the Yinyang Sea is famous for its unique color, which is a mix of blue and yellow.
It is a remarkable geographical landscape in the coastal region of Taiwan’s northeast corner. Since the nearby Jinguashi Mountain is rich in pyrite, which forms copper and iron after weathering, an acid called ferrous hydroxide is suspended into the water; this acid absorbs sediment, resulting in the yellowish-blue color that makes the Yinyang Sea so unique.
The water in the bay, which as a result of natural minerals is yellowish brown in color, is completely different from the blue seawater; this contrast is often praised as a natural color palette.

12. King Car Kavalan Distillery Yilan

20 Best Attractions to visit in Taiwan
I used to think that Yilan’s just a place near Taipei and there’s nothing to be excited about until I stayed 4 days and 3 nights in this beautiful garden of Taipei and I enjoyed the staycation alot.
One of the most interesting things I did in Yilan with my family is visiting this King Car Kavalan Distillery. The landscape, the building, the view, the souvenirs, the food, and everything in this place is worth your while.
What impresses me the most is that they transformed this place as one of the tourist spots in Yilan. A total Taiwanese business genius. They work and they earn from the guests.
Kavalan Distillery has been pioneering the art of single malt whisky in Yilan County, Taiwan, since 2005. Kavalan sources the mineral-rich meltwaters of Snow Mountain and is aged in a unique combination of intense heat and humidity together with sea and mountain breezes. All this combines to create the quality, smoothness, and fruity character for which Kavalan is known.
Kavalan takes Yilan County’s old name. A land of blessings, it was here that entrepreneur Mr. Tien-Tsai Lee dreamed of a new whisky homeland and a ‘century-old’ distillery to last generations.
Mr. Lee’s ambition to create Taiwan’s first whisky took him across the old world to the sacred distilleries of Scotland and Japan. He knew to compete, Taiwan must be world-class, and this tested every sinew of his resolve.
Kavalan brings together a highly skilled R&D team which takes on the legacy of renowned whisky specialist, the late Dr. Jim Swan. It is backed by King Car Group and its more than 40 years of beverage experience and knowledge.

14. Jiaoxi Station Yilan

20 Best Attractions to visit in Taiwan
The special ground or crust stratum in Yilan County had made this area well known for its numerous hot springs, which are the result of air warmed by some source underground, and rising upward blended with under-layer water. Among them you would see the most historic “Jiaoxi Hot Spring,” which is quite rare in Taiwan for its occurrence on a flatland. “Tangwei Hot Spring,” meanwhile, has been famous since Qing Dynasty and placed on the list of “Eight Scenes of Lanyang Area.”
The Jiaoxi Hot Spring originates at the foot of a hill behind Fuchung Temple at Deyang Village, Jiaoxi Township. While streaming along the ditches and highways, running through the railroads, the welling hot waters gather into a brook, serving local people as natural baths at the string of boiling ditches in ancient times.

15. Jiaoxi Fish Spa

20 Best Attractions to visit in Taiwan
One of the attractions in Jiaoxi Yilan is the famous fish spa. I do think it’s a very special thing to do in Yilan but it takes guts to actually dip your feet in the fish pond and let the school of fish have the mukbang. The tiny bites on your feet and legs feel so weird and ticklish at the same time. In my personal experience, I had to consume a mug of beer before I feel numb with the munching.
16. Wai Ao Beach Yilan

20 Best Attractions to visit in Taiwan
Wai’ao (Outer Harbor) of Toucheng, Yilan is located to the north of Wushih Fishery Harbor. It is a flat expanse of beach, with great views such as snowy white waves gradually climbing the shore while glittering under the sunlight and the vague shadow of Turtle Island in the distance. What a sight!
Besides playing with the waves, this area provides extreme sports that combine excitement, technique, and difficulty, such as paragliding, surfing, and other activities that require courage! Of course, easier choices such as dune buggies will allow tourists to travel all around Wai’ao’s beaches in a 3-dimensional exploratory trip totally up to themselves! As the night falls, tourists will also be able to choose from quality B&Bs and pass the night listening to the waves!

20. Ximending Rainbow Street Taipei City

20 Best Attractions to visit in Taiwan
This is just a very small and simple rainbow street at Exit 6 Ximending Station and yet it’s so popular to the tourists. It’s actually a check-in spot in Taipei City. You’ve never been to Taiwan if you have no photo in this place. I think since 2023, post pandemic time, you see tourists taking their pictures here. This street has never been empty since then.
This shorts was taken in 2021 when it’s still pandemic time in Taiwan and nobody thinks this small space is special until recently when tourists are visiting Taiwan and they find this check-in spot in Ximending interesting and maybe also cute.
