Taichung is a special municipality in central Taiwan. It’s Taiwan’s second-largest city, with more than 2.85 million residents, making it the largest city in Central Taiwan. It serves as the core of the Taichung–Changhua metropolitan area, Taiwan’s second-largest metropolitan area. (Reference: Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taichung)
This is my second time to visit Taichung for the year 2024 and the more I get to know the place, the more I wanted to come back for adventures and discoveries. Taichung for me is a vibrant place for tourists and once you experience Taichung, you’ll surely love it forever.

Day 1 Road Trip from New Taipei City to Taichung City
Really excited for this trip and I’ve been waiting for this break for so long so I don’t want you guys to miss even a heartbeat. Sharing our itinerary to all of you hoping to give you an idea of how wonderful Taichung is and how valuable it is to prioritize quality rest for working parents like us while on a vacation.
One of our travel goals is to taste an authentic Taiwanese food in Taichung and I was so satisfied with everything I ate for these past few days. Let’s start our adventure!
First Stop: Hukou Service Center
We started our journey a little earlier from the usual so from the original plan to drive directly to Taichung City, we decided to stretch our arms and legs at Hukou Service center.
Personally, I am really glad there’s a Louisa Coffee here so I could easily get my favorite flatwhite.
This is a themed service stop with so many Sanrio characters visible in almost all corners of the place and it adds the warmth that welcomes everyone from an exhausting long drive.
And for my recent finds, I recommend trying the automatic massage chair. I mean, I know this is Not a new thing to anyone but after an hour of drive from New Taipei, this is a nice way to have a quality time for relaxation.

Jenn Lann Temple 大甲鎮瀾宮
Great Itinerary for my 4D3N in Taichung!
Daijia Jenn Lann Temple is one of the most famous Matzu Temples in Taiwan. It has over 200 years of history. It is filled with pilgrims all year long. The inspection tour held in March every year has become a world-famous religious ceremony. It has attracted domestic and international tourists. It is a scenic spot that best represents Dajia. The violet jade Matzu of Jenn Lann Temple and the Golden Matzu in the basement of Matzu cultural museum are the treasures of the temple. Now, Matzu is considered one of the three treasures of Taichung. It is a scenic spot you must visit in Taichung. ( Reference: https://travel.taichung.gov.tw/en/attractions/intro/856)
Thronged by crowds, the palanquin carries Taiwan’s top goddess: Mazu. Based on a Northern Song Dynasty legend about a witch named Lin Mo, the deity was originally only worshipped as a protector of fishermen in coastal Fujian Province. But with a growing list of miracles credited to her over time, she came to be seen as having dominion over everything connected to water and became known more generally as the god of water resources and farming. Beginning in the Song Dynasty, several emperors canonized her. When the admiral Shi Lang subjugated Taiwan in the early Qing Dynasty, his success was credited to Mazu’s assistance. Consequently, Emperor Kangxi conferred on her the title “Queen of Heaven.” Backed by imperial approval, Mazu worship rose to new heights, creating a strong platform for its continued presence in Taiwan. It has the most delicious taro in Taiwan and I mean that. I’ve been to Jiufen to try its taro and I thought it was the tastiest taro ball I’ve tried until I had been to Dajia and ate here at Dajia Taro Castle. I will surely try this again if I happen to visit Dajia or Taichung.

Zhongshe Flower Market 中社觀光花市
Zhongshe Flower Market is one of the most trending destinations in Taichung on Tiktok. If you are into creativity and aesthetics, you can try your photography and videography skills in this place.
Chungshe Tourist Flower Market is the only flower market that succeeded in growing tulips in low altitude areas of central Taiwan. By special techniques of refrigeration applied, the flowering time is regulated, and about 150,000 tulip bulbs with differing varieties are planted and in full bloom from January to March each year. So when you visit the flower market to see the tulip blossoms during the period, no matter where you look, the tulip fields will be no doubt gorgeously colorful. You’ll feel as if you were in Holland without going far away there. (Reference: http://www.flowerjs.com.tw/?page_id=6)

From our trip to Zhongshe Flower Market, it poured in Taichung City so we decided to stay at Showtime Live to wait for the rain to stop and grab some lunch. Yizhong Street Night Market
I think I have a new favorite night market in Taichung. It’s my very first time here at Yizhong Street Night Market and I noticed the productivity of the place. There are so many stores, real stores not claw machines. In Taipei, more and more claw machines are present in many commercial places including night markets but in Yizhong Street Night Market, you can taste variety of street foods and buy some stuffs of your liking such as accessories, clothings, electronics and more.
It is located near Chungyo Department Store and linked with Sanmin Shopping District. National Taichung University of Science and Technology, Taichung First Senior High School, and National Taiwan University of Sport are not far away from it. There are huge number of student population, street vendors, and eating and drinking places here. You can see all sorts of information related to fashion everywhere, and they are all at your fingertips. It is always crowded with people on holidays and is very lively!
Yucai Street is full of street vendors, and most of the clothing shops are in the small lanes. All fashionable and progressive gadgets will appear here first. If you are a follower of fashion, you must not miss Yizhong Night Market. ( Reference here: https://travel.taichung.gov.tw/en/attractions/intro/1551)

Lavender Forest 薰衣草森林台中新社店
Xinshe, Taichung is the birthplace of Lavender Forest. The area has abundant water sources and good natural conditions, thus it has a rich variety of products and flowers. Enter the forest, switch to the tranquil pace of mountain life, breathe fresh air, appreciate the greenery, and leave everything behind, leading a simple mountain life.

Apart from the beautiful sight of the mountain and the trees, Lavender Forest sells different kinds of products. My personal favorite is the Lavender loofah soap. This was out of our plan for the day. As we drove up to Lavender Forest, we passed by here and felt like trying their food so we did and it was one of the best decisions we made for the day.
They also sell different kinds of mushrooms and some vegetables in the most affordable price. I think what I appreciate the most here is their food. It’s undoubtedly and undeniably delicious.

Taichung Central District
This Taichung Central District is just few walks away from our hotel so I decided to stroll around and observe the place. I must say this is where you can see a multicultural Taichung because you can find so many Vietnamese, Indonesian restaurants here as well as a Filipino Restaurant too.
The availability of so many kinds of food and products makes this place a central of cultural exchange as well. If you are not allergic to any kinds of food, you can test your foodie level here.

Zhongxiao Road Night Market
Dated back to the Japanese colonial period, Zhongxiao Night Market is the place of abundant late-night snack choices in Taichung City. Meat, seafood, grilled duck, beverages, oyster vermicelli, etc, you name it. It is also where the renowned Ding Wang Spicy Hot Pot originated.
Unlike other shopping districts, Zhongxiao Night Market is known exclusively for the delicious food. Situated next to the Third Market which closes in the afternoon, Zhongxiao Nigh Market starts warming up right after the Third Market closes, so most vendors do not open until 4 in the afternoon.
Most food come in a satisfying portion at a cheap price, so you can devour it all at once without concerning over a tight budget. Some of the must-try dishes include bamboo rice, fried chicken, Zhongxiao BBQ, vermicelli and sugarcane juice.

National Taiwan Museum of Comics 國家漫畫博物館 NTMC
In April 2023, the Ministry of Culture broke away from the form of a single-point exhibition hall and selected the Taichung Criminal Office building complex for revitalization and reuse. It will be built into a National Comics Museum with a total area of 2.75 hectares, a museum, a library, and a creative base.
The park connects 19 existing historical buildings and builds a new main building base on the north side that combines comics collection, research, display, education promotion, library and animation cinema. Just like comics are created through continuous imagination.
Among the historical buildings and brand-new museum buildings that are engraved with past memories, comic works of different themes and generations are presented, and diverse types of comic exhibitions are created to showcase Taiwanese comics in the exchange and collision of the past and the future, confinement and innovation. Vigorous vitality.

Taichung Train Station
The station was originally constructed in 1905 in a wooden building architectural style and started its operation in 1908. In 1917, it was rebuilt as a red brick structure with Renaissance architectural style.
On 16 October 2016, the elevated station was inaugurated in which the ground-level station was shut down. The first train that arrived at the elevated station was at 06:28. The ceremony was attended by President Tsai Ing-wen and Transportation and Communication Minister Hochen Tan.
The old station has one side platform and one island platform. The architecture dates from the era of Japanese rule, and is classified as a National Tier 2 Historic Site. The now-defunct Taiwan Sugar Railways’ Zhong-Zhuo line once stopped at the station.
The new station layout has one side platform and two island platforms, but currently only one side platform and one island platform are used. They have the same numbering as the old station only reversed. (Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taichung_railway_station)
Taichung Train Station has become a landmark in Taichung City. The beautiful landscape and the attractive architectural structures of old and new train station are truly recommendable.

Houkou Service Stop Northbound
This Houkou Service Stop Northbound is one of my favorite stops while traveling from southern part of Taiwan to Taipei. This is also a Sanrio themed service stop that makes it more enjoyable not only for the adults but for the kids as well. This isn’t the first time I featured service stops in Taiwan. I find it really admirable for the Taiwan government to invest on service stops that make travel in the island convenient and pleasurable.
