“Filipiniana” The Best way to represent the Philippines in Taiwan

Filipiniana, based on the definition by Isagani Medina from “Collection Building: Filipiniana”, in his In Developing Special Library Collections, Filipiniana: Proceedings (November 1992), refers to Philippine-related books and non-book materials (such as Culture; figurines, games, FASHION and others). The materials may be produced inside or outside the Philippines by Filipino or non-Filipino authors. The product could be literature written in any of the languages and dialects in the Philippines or a foreign language.

Based on former dean and professor Rosa M. Vallejo of the Institute of Library Science of the University of the Philippines the term was a derivation from two root words: namely Filipinas, the Spanish-language version of the country name of the Philippines and -ana or -aniana, which means “collected items of information” which may be anecdotal or bibliographical in nature.

It is also defined as publications dealing with the Philippines in whatever language they may be written and place where they may have been printed. It could also be materials published by Filipinos encompassing any subject matter regardless of the imprint of the publication. It also includes printed materials prior to the American period (1898–1946) in Philippine History regardless of the author and the topic.

The De La Salle University Library defined it as all book publications regarding the Philippines and the peoples and culture of the Philippines regardless of author, imprint and language. The definition encompasses, in general, works written by Filipinos, books written in the Philippine languages, publications and yearbooks produced by the government of the Philippines, publications include “substantial portions” and chapters about the Philippines (except publications containing only a small portion or a chapter about the Philippines), and works that deal with the “application of scientific thought and methodology to national and local “needs and circumstances” in the Philippines.

1. Philippine National Hero – Dr. Jose Rizal “Baro ni Pepe”

Dr. Jose Rizal’s face sketched on a canvas big T-shirt. This beautiful artwork and masterpiece was designed by Rods Ramos, a Filipino migrant worker in Taiwan. I saw Rod wearing this for the fashion style category as he joined one of the pageants here in Taiwan.

This is a Filipiniana fashion representing my wonderful homeland the Philippines. As the world knows, Dr. Jose Rizal is famous anywhere in the globe in terms of intelligence and historical participation. He is also a great writer and a poet. The books he wrote that continues to be patronized in our country is El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere.

2. Filipiniana Dress

The terno dress has been through it all. It evolved from the early Spanish colonial period (1700s), the revolution against Spain and the Philippine American War (Victorian Era), the American Colonial period, two World Wars, past the atomic age, through the authoritarian rule of the Marcos regime… and then some.

A quick history lesson: the terno traces its origins to the baro’t saya, traditional Filipino clothing worn by women, which consists of the blouse (“baro” or “camisa”), a folded rectangular piece of fabric worn over the shoulders (“pañuelo” or “fichu”), and a short rectangular cloth (“tapis”) wrapped over top of a long skirt (“saya”). In the early Spanish colonial period, women from Luzon and Visayas wore these garments in layers of stripes and checkered patterns, which are a display of wealth. 2015 This was the very first time I wore a Filipiniana Terno in a National Event in Taiwan. This was the awarding of Taiwan Literature Award for Migrants. An annual writing competition for foreigners who are working here, has been here or living here too.

I chose this Filipiniana Terno because it’s colorful and it depicts our Philippine Flag. As a patriot, I believe this matched me the most.
