Wow Taiwan Episode 3 Name for Salmon

Do you guys like to eat salmon? You know if I’m gonna eat salmon everyday, I think I’d be very happy, and I’d be very healthy and I’d be smiling.

You know how to cook salmon? Well I’m not really a chef. I’m not even a good cook. I’m trying to be one because I’ve never learned cooking during my younger years but because I have my own, how do you call that, oven? So, I just buy a piece of salmon and then I’m gonna spread it with whatever I have like, from Mc Cormick, and the, the simplest I got would be a salt and then that’s it.

And then I’m, i’m gonna be enjoying the juicy and really tasty skin of salmon. Well I think you guys also know that salmon is very famous in a sushi restaurant. Well in Taiwan, we have a lot of sushi express. People just love to eat shushi.

And you know you don’t have to go to a very expensive restaurant just to grab a yummy bite of sushi. You just like, go to a, nearest MRT or M – R – T Metro Rail Train and then when you go out from it’s exit you’ll gonna see a sushi express.

Isn’t that amazing? And then you can even have that yummy and super hot miso soup. Well, recently in Taiwan, well it’s not really recently, it happened yesterday and it’s still going on up to this very moment. There’s this one sushi restaurant, it’s a sushi express and the name of that sushi restaurant is Shushiro.

And there are 20 stores in Taiwan like it’s nationwide. What they did is that, they have this promo from March 17 to March 18. So what, what, what is this promo all about?

If you have a name that sounds like, like one one word that sounds like GUI YU, you’ll gonna have 10% off. If you have two words in your name with the same sound, you’ll gonna get 50% off. Now here’s the catch. If you have two at least two of your name that sounds, not just sounds like Gui Yu, even the spelling is the same, you’ll gonna have whole table for free!

I’m sorry for like giggling a little bit because uhm, you’ll gonna sur…you’ll gonna be surprised after, after I explain in a while..But for me, isn’t that really, let’s say impossible to have Salmon or Gui Yu as a name? That’s, that’s really impossible like example my name is Huang Chini, and then my mom would call me Huang Gui Yu. Im sorry I just cant stop laughing. Like, Oh my God!

So..If it sounds like, like Gui Yu, it.. and then I’m gonna have 10% off it could be Huang Chi Yu, yeah, sounds like. Now it could be like Huang ah..Gui Yu but different word but that’s only 50% off. But if it’s like, the whole name is really Gui Yu, same character, then you’ll gonna have a whole table for free.

I shouldn’t be giggling because you don’t know what’s happening right. I..I really apologize but I just can’t stop because I was about to have my recommendations for night market but I just cant, I just can’t hm..hold myself from sharing this very big incident because even hm..in Washington Post they already have this in their news so this Salmon thing in Taiwan already gained an international attention.

And according to that news not only in Washing post, there’s also in the Guardian, Insider and so many others. And in the news it said that Taiwan government warned its people or their people to just stop changing their names. Well, you would be, you would be very surprised like, wait Gen, change the name? How could that be possible?

We can’t do that! Can you do that? Can you do that in your country? Because in the Philippines we can never, we can never ever change our name, never. Like the moment you..you’re born, it’s your name until the end. Like, if your mom would call you let’s say Social Distance, you’ll be Social Distance forever or perhaps like the one that’s famous on tiktok. If your parents would call you Quarantina, then you’ll be called Quarantina forever.

But hey hey hey in Taiwan you can change your name three times. Imagine that! So I can have like Huang Chini, Huang Chi Yo or Huang Chi Ya. See? I could have like, three names. So, or I could be Huang Chini and Huang Gui Yu too! Right?

Can you imagine during this promo period of the restaurant Shushiro, that’s been goin’ on until today because it, it started yesterday March 17 until today March 18. Gosh there were 135 people who changed their names as Gui Yu in two days?

Can you guys imagine that? There were like, you know, you know which part of the wo..of Taiwan got the most number of people who changed their name into Gui Yu or Salmon? My God I can’t stop giggling! I’m sorry.

• In Kaohsiung there were like 29. Imagine 29 people changed their name into Gui Yu just to eat sushi? Can you guys imagine that?
• In Taipei City there were 20.
• In New Taipei City there were 26.
• In Taoyuan, where you can, you can have have the Taoyuan International Airport when you come here, you will be in Taoyuan, there were 14 people.
• In Hsinchu City there were 3.
• And then there’s like, In Hsinchu County there were 2.
• In Taichung City there were 22.
• And in Changhua there’s 1.
• In Yunlin there’s 3.
• In Chiayi there’s 1.
• In Tainan City there’s 13.
• And in Pintung, there’s 1.

Wow Taiwan and the Taiwanese’ Love for Salmon Sushi

So..Imagine! That’s from north to south already in Taiwan! Everyone is going crazy with the promotion of Shushiro from March 17 yesterday until today. Isn’t that really just awesome. Very interesting people. In Taiwan there’s this saying that goes:

不要小看台灣人 “不要 Buyao that’s dont, 小看 Xiao Kan underestimate, 台灣人 Taiwan Ren Taiwanese people.”

Because they are really willing to change their names just to get that whole table for sushi free. Isn’t that hilarious. Ok but I’m still proud to be here in Taiwan. I just find that really cute, really adorable. Now you don’t know this, but ehh..I asked you about it right? Can you change your name in your country because in Taiwan, again, I would reiterate that they can really change their name for three times.

So there were 135 people who changed their name into Gui Yu or Salmon, the, the exact character, in two days! Now, the longest name were 26 words! Like they, they have a name with 26 words! Oh my gosh! And I’m sorry because I cannot pronounce the name ‘coz it’s in Chinese character, my Chinese um, ability is limited but imagine that, I only have 3 words, Huang Chi Ni, so for them it could be Gui Yu bla, bla, bla, bla, bla, bla. That’s a lot of salmon there.

And you know, because it’s for free if you have the same character right, so there’s one, one guest, who went to Sushiro and was able to eat 13,000NT for free! Imagine 1-3-0-0-0 just, just for that! And it’s really free! Because as promised if you have Gui Yu in your name, you won’t pay anything. It’s just for free.

And there’s, there’s also one thing there. You know there’s one, one Taiwanese. Yup, it’s so successful like, that person was able to change the name into Gui Yu and then was able to get into a sushi shop or sushi restaurant and ate whatever, whatever that person likes. Like, ate until the person is satisfied.

Until oops! When, when that person or when that Taiwanese was about to pay, that person found out that he went into a wrong sushi shop. Like, Oh, oh that’s a blooper, “I ate everything I want and changed my name into Gui Yu, and I went into the Sushiro thinking that it’s the correct restaurant, only to find out that I have to pay a lot because I went into a wrong restaurant, a sushi restaurant just because I didn’t che, check the name!”

Just one character, just one character mistake of that shushi restaurant and then uh, that money and that name Gui Yu is gone forever. That’s so so funny right? And there’s also one very famous online. Uhm..There’s this, there’s this screenshot of a conversation between the son and of course his mom.

And then, the son said, “Mom can I change my name into Salmon, Gui Yu?” And then his mom said, “No! Why?” “Well I just want to eat sushi for free!” And then his mom said, “You don’t have to change your name! I’ll just buy for you!” And then uhm, the son said, “It’s alright mom, I can just change my name. I will only pay for 50NT for the name change then I’m gonna it back so that’s only a hundred.”

A hundred dollar for a sushi and for a sushi that, that I can eat for all i can, I think I deserve it. And then the mother said, “No you can’t, you can only change once.” And then the son said, “Why?” Because “I already changed your name before!”

Wow Taiwan and the Culture

So…like.. I think, isn’t Taiwanese really cute? Like..again, I would say, “Bu Yao Xiao Kan Taiwan Ren”. Like, even this very, very simple promotion, everyone knows about it, even the international community know about it and I think the most intelligent one is that Sushiro because in just 2-day promo, the whole world knew about them and everyone likes it. It is indeed Taiwan’s popular salmon ever!

But before I end this guys, I just want to, hm, emphasize something on eating food, your habit in eating and of course preserving and how you call it, uhm, saving food because there’s one person who changed his name into Gui Yu and then ate everything all about the Gui Yu but didn’t eat the rice so it’s, it’s wasting food.

So.. uhm, I don’t think, what..what I’d say.. I can’t blame anyone who wanted to join the promotion and I’m sure Shushiro has 20 stores islandwide didn’t expect the people to have that kind of response. I don’t know it..it’s because of pandemic or something but we didn’t really have a lockdown here, everyone just can go around so it’s typical that Taiwanese people would really go for promotion because you know, no one can go abroad so people can just join whatever it is, events, and whatever in the country.
