Sexual Immorality

1Corinthians 6:12-20

12 I have the right to do anything you say- but not everything is beneficial. I have the right to do anything - but I will not be mastered by anything.

13 You say, Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both. The body however is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord and the Lord for the body.

14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.

15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!

16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, The two will become one flesh.

17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.

19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you received from God? You are not your own;

20. you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Sexual Immorality

Sexual immorality in the Bible refers to engaging in sexual activity outside of the sacred boundaries of marriage and has spiritual repercussions of giving in to temptation. In human history, since it carries a personal stigma, many people avoid discussing sexual sin.

Sexual immorality was derived from the Greek word porneia, a term used in the Bible to allude to specific sexual acts God forbids. It encompasses bestiality, homosexuality, adultery, prostitution, and sexual encounters between unmarried people. It is used metaphorically in the Book of Revelation to refer to “Babylon the Great,” a religious prostitute who slept with the powerful for money and power.

Any sexual intercourse that takes place outside of marriage is considered sexually immoral, according to God and the Bible. This term, which can also be rendered as “whoredom” and “idolatry,” refers to giving up sexual purity and is usually applied to premarital sex. Fornication and committed adultery are included in this (premarital sexual relations or extramarital sex).

The importance of the body is not just a result of God’s design but also because our behavior in connection to our bodies has a hardwired impact on our emotions and relationships. The importance of the body is substantially increased in a believer since it is united to Jesus Christ and becomes God’s abode.

Sexual immorality with non-Christians bonds us to that person against God’s purpose for us in Christ and to the disadvantage of other relationships, which we might want to protect. It also ties Christ to one who is in disobedience to Him and desecrates God’s holy abode. Because of these factors, sexual immorality’s effects on us, our spouses, the church, and Christ are grave.

Humans are sexual creatures. We are, of course, much more than that, but we are not less. Our sexuality is a fundamental aspect of who and what we are, a valuable gift from God intended to unite husband and wife and advance the human race.

Like everything else, our sexuality is a gift given to us in trust. We must faithfully manage it, utilize it as God directs, and refrain from using it in ways he forbids.
