What are these 🏅🥉🥈🥇🎖?

If you’re a Taiwanese or from other countries aside from the Philippines, it could be your first time to see these round shaped printed white paper with a colored ribbon but for the Filipinos, these are more than familiar.

In my time, the first picture shows Elementary school awardee ribbons while the other are High School academic medals. A student gets this Academic Honor award if he or she shows excellence at school after the teachers had done all the necessary academic and nonacademic score evaluation.

In my experience, earning an academic award is much harder for unpopular students and not famous family names. It makes me think that in this pandemic time, students who are learning online or using modules for home based instruction need not to worry about Favoritism

What is Favoritism at school?

Favoritism means the practice of giving unfair preferential treatment to one person or group at the expense of another.

In my school days from Elementary to High School, Favoritism was real and deeply seated to the extent that it gave me an indescribable distaste of my learning environment. The idea of favoritism inside the walls of our classroom corrupted the innocence of the pupils including myself and it somehow created distrust and injustice in me while studying at the public school in our village.

Have you had one of these? Did you earn an award every school year? If you have these academic award souvenirs, how can you design an ornament with these? A frame? In an album? In a box?

Despite the presence of Favoritism in my student’s life, I was fortunate to be one of the honor students from the first Grade up to High School. During my Elementary years, I had six years only while the students now will graduate only at the 7th Grade.

In High School, I had 4 years to complete it while now they spend 5 years with skills training in order to pass the curriculum in the secondary level.

Unlike what the students now in the Philippines experiencing semestral breaks, I only had Christmas and National Holidays then. In my time, it was a full school year that was recapitulated by a Commencement exercise with the parents or guardians of the students in that pertaining school year.

Thus, the idea of one full Lechon Manok for an academic award was my father’s means of inspiring me and my siblings to work hard at school and be part of the Top 10 at the end of the school year. It might sound ridiculous to many but my dad’s Lechon Manok gave me the first concrete understanding of having a Goal and Focusing on my goal.

Aside from the Lechon Manok, my father also bought every 100 points or perfect scores as a form of reward that for me was also a way to teach the kids the essence of sowing good seeds to reap a better harvest.
